At the core of my theory lies a singular, resonant theme: love is the plumbline running through every timeline, binding us to the iterations of ourselves and others across existence. It is the vehicle that allows us to shift and evolve, guiding our movement from one version of being to another. In my theory, this love, uncovered through the collective consciousness of those we encounter, reveals a shared essence. Almost like an ether from which we are all carved. Through this connection, we learn to interact with the iterations of existence, weaving them into something greater.
Facets of Love
One facet of love we encounter is conditional; a love built on active choice, effort, and practice. It thrives in stability, grounding us and fostering contentment. This love is rare, not because there is a limited number of beings who can fulfill this role, but because it requires precision and alignment to flourish. It is the foundation of a fulfilled life, a happiness that sustains the soul for its next iteration. For lack of a more precise term, I’ll call this the “soulmate.” A soulmate helps us build a home within ourselves, a space where love becomes a steady, enduring force.
Another form of love is unconditional; transcending circumstances and existing without prerequisites. This love is a gravitational pull toward another being who shares our essence. It is through this bond that we unravel universal truths and align ourselves with the purpose of the collective. I describe it as unconditional because I find that this love doesn’t need a specific set of conditions to thrive. It flourishes on its own because we find it in those who are a reflection of ourselves. I’ll refer to this connection as the “twin soul.” Unlike the soulmate, whose love provides stability, the twin soul inspires, disrupts, and catalyzes transformation. Twin souls trigger an uncovering, a revelation of truths buried within us.
El-Mohtar and Gladstone capture this catalytic essence in their work, writing, “You invigorated your Shift’s war effort and, in doing so, invigorated me” (This Is How You Lose the Time War, 2019). Twin souls propel us into spaces of profound realization, unlocking knowledge we could not access on our own.
A Philosophical Exploration
In my academic exploration of the philosophy of love, I often struggled to articulate the specificity of the love I sought to describe. Philosophy became a tool for peeling back the layers, for defining the boundaries and specificities of love in its many forms. Examining the role of love in the psyche of other beings guided my interest in philosophical thought. It also became a way to articulate the unspoken language between souls, those beings we encounter who force us into deeper layers of self-awareness.
My attempts at articulating this were categorized as too vague or broad, as I tried to define the soulmate without creating space for the twin soul. I was inclined toward this precarious, intricate love, a love essential to uncovering the knowledge of the collective, but I couldn’t fully articulate these components until I had experienced them. I had a framework, but more connections were needed to establish an understanding of this facet of love. It is my hope that through these musings, I might further hone that articulation I so desperately attempted to capture throughout my graduate thesis. This theory of love, shaped by its many forms and connections, became clear through lived experience.
When I Found You
You came to me in many forms, through different adaptations across my life: as a childhood companion, as a steady guiding tether, as a magnetic presence I can’t relinquish, as my safe harbor, creating a space where my complexities could be seen and embraced. Your presence was a trigger, a domino effect that set off a chain reaction of uncovering. You unlocked memories and truths, fragments of a shared reality we’ve been piecing together across lifetimes.
Your sound, the smell of your home, the way your skin feels—all of these became traces, guiding me back to the contours of our collective story. The shape of that connection grew clearer, more tangible.
You didn’t just inspire me; you redefined my understanding of existence. Our connection provides the criteria for my happiness, my purpose. In turn, I hope my presence triggers the same uncovering for you. Together, we form a correspondence, a dialogue that transcends time and space.
Who triggered whom? It no longer matters. What matters is the entanglement, the way we have irrevocably shaped each other. This is the love that pulls us forward, the love that teaches us to shift, to move, to uncover.
Love That Threads Through Us
Love, in its myriad forms, is more than an emotion; it is a force that shapes our trajectory. Whether it is the steady, grounding love of a soulmate or the catalytic, transformative love of a twin soul, it serves as the foundation for growth, discovery, and purpose.
Without the stability that the soulmate provides, one wouldn’t have the necessary platform to dive into and explore the many facets of love we are meant to engage with throughout this iteration. Both are required for the soul to create a full picture of what is to be understood. So many of us feel shame when our hearts are capable of interacting with more than one human on our path. Society has taught us that a specific kind of love is only meant to be felt between you and the person you choose to spend your life with. I argue that this is far too limiting.
Alternatively, I am not suggesting that everyone form a polyamorous relationship with each person they feel connected to (though that option is valid for some). I am suggesting that we pay closer attention to the beings placed in our path and create a unique space for them in our hearts. If we turn away out of fear for misplaced emotions, we will lose out on all the knowledge and wisdom these many facets of love can demonstrate to us.
It is my theory that throughout our lives, we are meant to remain curious about these many facets of love, keeping our minds and hearts open to each experience of triggering and reacting that leads us to a greater knowledge of the collective consciousness. As we navigate the threads of existence, it is love that binds us, inspires us, and leads us to uncover the truths of ourselves and the collective. Through love, we are reminded that we are not solitary beings but part of an interconnected consciousness, woven together across timelines.
My gratitude is overwhelming. I owe you my life. You are the thread that has sewn my path, the catalyst for my uncovering, and the reason I continue to seek.
